Six months have passed since the terrifying battle with Charlie Pink-eye and the Motor City Hammer in the zombie-infested mountains of the Rot & Ruin. BLOODBATH.
Dust & Decay sated my thirst for more zombie action! All the elements that guarantee a spectacular sequel is there: crazier villains, bleaker situations, and more terrifying truths. I love Benny Imura and his unusual story! Man, I almost cried when one of my beloved characters died. 😦
Months of training and hardwork given by Tom to Benny, Nix, and Chong seemed futile once the horror of Rot & Ruin came upon them blow after freakin’ blow – they were still unprepared. The Ruin is meaner and more terrifying than before. I’m used to Benny‘s humor by now, and pair that with Chong’s wisecracks and i’m enjoying the book! I really like Chong – why he loves reading, that’s why! I love his character’s development the most. Gosh, i hate Nix – i didn’t like what she became after her horrific ordeal in book 1. Lilah is more like my girl. Tom… sigh. i’m such a fangirl when it comes to Tom. Every time he gears up for battle, i’m so excited! The emotional and mental preparations Tom did is admirable. That’s the legend of a hero i want!
Dust & Decay is told in different POVs – from Benny, to Chong, to Tom, even to Sally Two-Knives who was only a secondary character! It made the story fuller and easier to understand. White Bear is just a big bloke, but Preacher Jack… that’s a scary one. He reminds me of Charlie from The Knife of Never Letting Go. Preacher Jack is crazy, crazy, CRAZY. But oh so invincible! Tom Imura was almost no match for him. Almost.
The ending was brutal. Even if Maberry killed off one of his main characters, I felt no hard feelings on how the story turned out. He showcased Benny as a potential zombie hero worth of my praise, skill-wise and ‘warrior-smart’-wise.
